Aberdeen Tomorrow!

It's been a stupidly long time since I posted a blog here!

First off, I'd better point out it's been nearly a year since I've done any stand-up. I'm not sure if there's a specific reason why, it's probably a combination of things. This will change soon though I think. I've been daydreaming some ideas up that might work. I'm thinking of going for a more "in-character" approach though. I think I'd feel a bit more comfortable in that setting. More on that side of things later.

The reason I'm posting this blog is because tomorrow Dave and I are driving up to Aberdeen for the weekend to appear as Bruce and Oscar in the short film "Speed Dating" by Killer Heels Productions. The film is about the strange concept of speed dating (who'd have guessed?) and the even stranger characters it attracts. Andrew and Emma from KHP asked us if we fancied appearing in the movie as Bruce and Oscar and obviously we said yes, so they wrote our characters into the script! I will post another blog up, probably on Monday explaining what went on over the weekend!

In the run up to all this, me and Dave have already been up to Aberdeen twice to film teaser trailers for the film. While we were there we talked to Andrew about eventually getting around to filming "All Roads Lead To Clap-Pool" and i swear it's still going to happen!! But it's still a question of money and planning. We need a decent amount of money to do the film justice and we need to consider the logistics of the monster we've created! Andrew hopes the appearence of Bruce and Oscar in "Speed Dating" will help when trying to pitch for funding though.

Aside from stand up and Bruce Clap I'm in the early stages of a new comedy project... more on this when things start to materialise!

The Beehive Inn,Edinburgh

I was in Edinburgh once again last night. A really last minute/short notice slot popped up at the Beehive Inn. I struggled to get my material together for this one and I think it showed. I started off well, trying out some new material, but I ended up getting a bit lost when trying to mix it into something I’d used before. The audience laughed in the right places though… and they did laugh! So it wasn’t a disaster, just didn’t run as smoothly as it has in the past.

It was a tiny room we were performing in, but it was full up. Completely different look and feel to the places I’ve performed in so far. But I think I liked it. It would be good to work on some specific audience-involving jokes and utilize them there.

The other comedians performing there were all really good. Especially a guy called Daniel Webster. Keep an eye out for him! The compeer Mikey Adams was really good too.

In other news, The Bruce Clap blogs are back in action. Dave and I are trying to stay ahead of ourselves and make sure there is a new blog every Wednesday as promised. The myspace page is in operation again and some of the oldskool clap fans have returned and are enjoying the new blogs. We’re hoping to regain and maintain everyone’s interest in Bruce in preparation for the film. Speaking of the film, we’re nearly ready to get going. Props have even started to be bought! It’s crazy to think that Dave and I started all this as a means of amusing ourselves and now someone has enough faith in us to throw some money at it and make a movie!
Anyway! I’m off to play the new UFC game. I knocked Chuck Liddell out in 34 seconds today! Mental!

Last night in Edinburgh

Well, I was in Edinburgh again last night. Back at the stand for the second time, I really wasn’t looking forward to this one. I wasn’t sure of the material I had ready and Dave wasn’t there.

When I got there the place was already nearly sold out! By the time my mate Will turned up, they weren’t gonna let him in cos the place was too full, but he not only blagged his way in… he blagged his way in for free!

I made my way to the back to see who I’d be on with and had a chat with some of the other comedians. Bob Graham was there - an excellent comedian who I performed alongside last time I was there. He went down a storm again!

So while through the back I found out I’d be on second. I was quite happy with that, but still pretty nervous and not expecting to do well. The lady that was on before me was really nice, but also really nervous. I watched the first few minutes of her act but had to head through to the back quickly for the changeover. I think by the time I was getting ready to come out the crowd had warmed to her. It took a while though, mainly because the microphone was taller than her face and people seemed to be struggling to hear!

When I was introduced by the compere (Billy Kirkwood, who was excellent) I just decided “fuck it, lets go hell for leather!” My theory being that at least if everything goes wrong, I went down fighting. So I more or less ran on stage, shouted at the audience and just went for it! …And someone up there must like me because it worked! I did some material about the funny side of heavy metal music which seemed to build them up slowly but surely. Then I moved onto some material about spiders which seemed to hit a chord with everyone. Got much bigger laughs than I expected, so I was chuffed!

Afterwards, through the back I met Vladimir McTavish, or “Paul” as he introduced himself to me. He was headlining and got to the venue just as I’d started, he said he really enjoyed my stuff! Which made me even happier! All in all, the night couldn’t have gone better really!

In other news, Bruce Clap is making his return to the internet! The blogs are coming back! Dave and I want to raise Bruce’s profile again in preparation for “All Roads Lead to Clap-Pool”. Concerning Clap-Pool, the script is just getting a final once over and then it’ll be ready to film… budget permitting!

Back from Edinburgh

Well, I did my second gig in Edinburgh last night. I travelled through with my girlfriend Hollie, my esteemed colleague Stuart Gordon and of course my faithful best mate and writing partner Dave… So if last night bombed I was taking him down with me! But contrary to my nerves and near shitting myself I did ok! I enjoyed it actually!

I took a risk early on by trying to start some banter with the audience and thank fuck it paid off ! It was quite busy audience-wise and they were definitely up for a laugh which helped. I was initially supposed to be first on the bill but one of the other comedians asked to swap slots with me because he had to go away early. So by the time I got onto stage the crowd had been well warmed up. There was only one joke that didn’t really get quite the laugh I’d hoped for and that was me suggesting to look at John Major you’d be forgiven for thinking he looked like he’d throw like a girl. But in all fairness I cracked that joke after spending a few minutes talking about how the oppression of women is wrong, which it is! …So maybe the audience were just confused?!!

But overall I got some good laughs in the right places and most importantly didn’t die on my arse. There was another comedian on the bill. I remember his first name was Tommy but can’t for the life of me remember what his surname was, but he was hilarious! When I find out his name I will seek him out online and hopefully be able to put up some links to his stuff.

Anyway, video is on YouTube. Link is below!

Back from Newcastle

Well, last night Dave and I were in Newcastle for my first attempt at doing live stand up. And strangely enough it went quite well! I was crapping myself but apparently I came across very confident and did very well for my first time according to the very much appreciated feedback I got back from the compere, Dave and the other comics!

I got a few laughs, more laughs than I thought I'd get, so I was very happy. The main worry for me, apart from the obvious was that the material I'd written was based on the insecurities straight people face with homosexuality. I was worried in case the material came across as homophobic (which was definitely not what I was going for!) but at the same time, I didn't want to water it down and dilute the humour. But luckily the gags were well received!

So that's the hardest part over, I've proved to myself I can get up and perform comedy live to people. Now the plan is for me and Dave to work together on material for the upcoming gigs in Edinburgh. We have some separate ideas which should easily marry into some great material, then all it's down to is worrying about delivery.

On the back of last night's efforts I've been welcomed back to perform on more new material nights at the Hyena and have been invited to book a slot at another new material night in Newcastle with the guys who run longlivecomedy.com

Anyway, not much else to say other than I shared the stage with some excellent performers who I look forward to hopefully performing along side again soon!
Dave filmed my performance and I've uploaded it to YouTube, so go and have a look!

Blog 1

Hello there. Welcome to Marco Hibbins vs Comedy. I should probably make it clear here and now that I am not opposing comedy. I do realise that in some contexts the title of this blog may suggest that. No, I am not opposing comedy. Quite the opposite in fact. I am embracing it.

My best mate/blood brother/writing partner: Dave and myself have been planning a pop at comedy since we were about sixteen. We've been writing scripts together and filming stuff on camcorders ever since we left school. Luckily for us, one of our scripts was accepted by Killer Heels Productions in Aberdeen. And budget permitting, the filming should hopefully start this summer!

But since receiving that bit of good news, we've not really done much. I've tried writing a bit, but keep hitting a wall and the same has happened with Dave. But in an attempt to help the cause, I've taken it upon myself to have a bash at Stand-up comedy. My first gig is down in Newcastle on Monday 23rd February at the Hyena. I live in Dundee so it's a bit of a way to go, but I've come to the conclusion that good things aren't just going to fall into my lap, so instead of sitting around with my thumb up my arse (I never physically do this. But now and again, I've found myself doing it in the metaphorical sense) I'm willing to go the extra length to do things like this. Since getting that slot sorted out two new ones have been offered to me from The Stand comedy club in Edinburgh. I'm well chuffed with these offers as The Stand is a cracking venue which plays host to a number of great comics. When I was last there, a comedian called Joe Heenan was compering and he was incredible. Look out for him!

I may also have something in the works for the Frog and Bucket comedy club in Manchester in a few months time, but nothing sorted yet.

But really, this blog is just going to be a place where I can vent my ideas, thoughts and frustrations on this little venture. So if you're reading this, hopefully you'll find it interesting and maybe even funny. But funny where it's meant to be funny. Not funny as in: "This guys a twat!" funny. It's probably no different from posting bulletins on Myspace or saying stuff on Bebo anyway. Except with this, you have the option of whether or not to read it, whereas with Bebo and Myspace you have people's bollocks rubbed in your face whether you like it or not.

Next blog shall be post Newcastle gig, hopefully with pictures or video or something!
